Assault Weapons

John McCain opposes restrictions on so-called "assault rifles" and voted consistently against such bans. Most recently he opposed an amendment to extend a ban on 19 specific firearms, and others with similar characteristics.

An assault rifle is a selective fire rifle or carbine firing ammunition with muzzle energies intermediate between those typical of pistol and high-powered rifle ammunition. Assault rifles are categorized between light machine guns, intended more for sustained automatic fire in a support role, and submachine guns, which fire a handgun cartridge rather than a rifle cartridge. Assault rifles are the standard small arms in most modern armies, having largely replaced or supplemented larger, more powerful battle rifles, such as the World War II-era M1 Garand and Tokarev SVT. Examples of assault rifles include the AK-47, the M16 rifle,the FAMAS and the Steyr AUG. Semi-automatic rifles, including commercial versions of the AR-15, and "automatic" rifles limited to firing single shots, even though incorrectly classified in the United States as assault rifles by the now defunct 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, are not assault rifles as they are not selective fire. Belt-fed weapons or rifles with very limited capacity fixed magazines are also generally not considered assault rifles.

Ok so the first is from McCain's website copy and pasted and then second is just wikipedia's entry for an assault rifle (i know that wikipedia is not the end all be all).

I am not even sure if I should have to explain this. Anyone with a functional brain should get the point. I am not here to say that people cannot hunt as I have friends who hunt and I very much enjoy the meat, not to mention the overpopulation issue in a lot of cases. However, I personally do not know anyone that uses an assault rifle to go get bambi or bambi's dad. So, I will gladly rewrite a new entry with an apology if someone can explain to me the function of having assault rifles available to the common person. I do not mean to be insensitive but to prove a point it is probably worth it. In my opinion the function of an assault rifle is as a murdering tool which has proven quite effective in recent times.
